Atlanta Day 5 - The Championship
We were up bright and early today (5:30) to be ready to leave by 7:00 AM.
Anyways we made it and left as soon as possible. Deniz managed to fall asleep after
drinking a tasty can of Fruit Loops.
It wasn't long before we were parked under the Georgia Dome, ready to move
all of the "spirit stuff" out and place them
in the stands. For some reason we tried to go
to the pits at 7:45 also, which was 15 minutes before they opened. So then we went
to the stands instead and found out we all had Canadian ties to wear. Great fun.
Then some of us made our way to the pits where we found out about the wireless and made that
comment earlier... Yeah. The internet was a bit too weak and disconnected often so that
didn't work out. I [andrew] eventually started working on the autonomous that would just knock down
the tetra without starting with one. T'was a challenge. One that will give me nearly enough
experience to level up. We have been trying a few different methods but feel this one is simple and
should work well once we have it down.
The first match came 'round quickly. The other robots are so much differnet from the regionals
because everyone knows what they're doing at this point. It was really neat to see some of the
very unique designs. Why have two tetras when you can play tetris with multiple baseballs? That
must have been what some teams were thinking anyways. We did fine, just tested out the autonomous
and practiced capping, etc. The second match a fuse blew and they played defense vs our alliance partner.
At lunch a bunch of us went to the Chief Delphi "web hug" where we met a lot of people
who we talk to through the Chief Delphi forums. That was fun.
In our second practice round we didn't have any problems aside from still testing the new autonomous mode and we
showed people what some would call "pwnage". Oh walrus, we have so much <3.
We had a couple hours before our last round and the sky got a little cloudy for a while. But it was still really warm.
We used this time to get on the practice field and get a suggestion for a new way to do autonomous mode for if we don't
start with a tetra.
Our last practice match the autonomous did what we wanted it to do but we think there just needs to be one adjustment.
The team practised its vocabulary skills by spelling words such as "Denizzzzzzzzzzzzzzz", "Roflolmao", and "1100000100" (772 in base 2).
So then we went to the Canadian Consolate afterwards where all of the other Canadian teams in Atlanta met.
It was really fun seeing all the familiar faces from Rochester, Waterloo, and Toronto coming together at the Championship.
After that everyone was leaving the GWCC and we met outside and played frisbee and such for a
while before we went back to the hotel to rendezvous for dinner.
Finally we went back to the hotel and then to the Olive Garden for a nice dinner courtesy of Sandwich
Secondary School. We also managed to bring the tetras to the olives.
