The Sabre Bytes Robotics Team 772, from LaSalle, Ontario, was established in 2001. Our team consists of approximately 40 high school students and 15 mentors. The team is divided into four sections: Mechanical, Electrical, Programming, and Business (further divided as Public Relations, and Communications).

The Mechanical Section’s responsibility is to build and design the body of the robot. The Electrical Section’s responsibility includes hooking up the control systems and sensors to allow the robot to operate and perform the specific task. The Programming Section programs the robot to complete the specific task we are given. The Public Relations Section raises money through fundraising efforts, contacting sponsors, and completing a detailed business plan. The Communications Section designs the website, produces flyers, creates an animation according to the task given, documents our team’s progress with photos and videos and keeps the community updated through our social media pages. Whether they are directly or indirectly involved with building the robot, this team provides everyone with an opportunity to participate in STEM.

The majority of the income of our team comes through fundraising, and without the necessary funds, the team cannot function. We are always looking for any potential sponsors to help get the team running smoothly throughout the year. We started 95 FLL and FLL Jr. teams, as well as 24 FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) teams in our area and Chatham-Kent. We also host and run the Southwest International Event, the two Windsor FLL Tournaments, and we host and assist in the Windsor Essex Great Lakes District Event, all of which we started or were instrumental in starting. Our goal is to establish more FRC, FLL and FLL Jr teams in our county and expand FIRST’s reach throughout southern Ontario and around the world.

FIRST provides us with a rare opportunity in the hands on world of science and technology. We look forward to sharing our experience with our community and by exposing elementary and high school students to take advantage of this remarkable program that Sandwich Secondary offers.
